Significantly improved communication for Delta Helium
Since its establishment in 2004, Delta Helium Test has developed into an internationally recognised service provider in the field of industrial leak detection. All technical operations are carried out on site by a team of two, whereby the technical inspector receives instructions from an especially equipped van in order to detect a leak. These technical operations often take place under unpredictable conditions, at high altitude and with a lot of ambient noise. Good communication via an open line is essential here. For many years, founder Marinus de Later has been active as a technical inspector in the field of helium leak detection and occasionally jumps in for help in specific cases. He spent years trying out all kinds of two-way radios and business-critical communication devices, but after two weeks of testing Vokkero’s devices, he knew what to do. “Vokkero works significantly better.”
The helium method
Delta Helium Testing is a completely independent company, operates independently and is based in Middelburg. Throughout Europe, Delta Helium Test specialists inspect complicated process systems for leaks in the mechanical, chemical, electrical engineering, pharmaceutical and food sectors. Owner and founder Marinus de Later explains how this works in practice: “A flawless production process is of great importance in (petro)chemical installations and power plants. Air leaks in vacuum processes have a very negative effect and are usually the cause of product contamination and/or loss of yield. It can also cause damage to the facilities as well as to the environment, which can even lead to hazardous situations. Delta Helium Test offers the possibility of detecting air leaks using the helium technology. A leak detector unit is connected to the vacuum system and the entire system is checked for leaks. The advantage of this is that it’s not necessary to interrupt the manufacturing process and the measurement does not affect the operation of the process. In addition, with the helium method it is possible to locate very small leaks in hard to reach places and by applying this method it’s possible to gain insight into the total air leakage of a vacuum system in a fast and efficient way. After this, measures can be taken to prevent loss of production and/or efficiency and therefore high costs.”
Not without risk
In practice, this means that the technical operations must always take place quickly and under sometimes extreme conditions. Marinus explains: “Delta Helium Test offers direct service during both shutdowns and emergency calls so that work can be carried out quickly, because time is money. We always work on-site in the factory, refinery or power plant to detect a leak in installations, heat exchangers or piping systems. The person working behind their laptop in the bus to detect the leak is unable to see or hear the technical inspector. Picture the technical inspector standing at a great height, usually in a noisy environment, or with steel structures or concrete walls blocking a good connection. Even with today’s wireless systems, it’s often difficult to communicate and there is a lot of interference. For years, I have been looking for a good two-way radio that can be used immediately everywhere and where the team can communicate easily and hands-free via an open line connection. You can imagine that it doesn’t work if you also have to press a push button on your two-way radio if you’re working high up on several platforms. Our work is not without risk so you have to be able to blindly trust each other through good communication, and I finally found what I was looking for with the Guardian Plus device at Vokkero.”
Full duplex open connection and hands-free
Because Marinus is always looking for even better equipment and more efficient working methods for his inspectors, he ended up at Flash through Google search. Marinus explains: “I kept looking until I was satisfied, I tried everything. I randomly ended up on the Flash website. On the same day, Jean-Pierre Audenaerdt helped me and showed me a demo of the full duplex two-way radio and suggested that I try it out for a fortnight. The equipment and accessories come in a beautiful case and we could pick it up immediately and try it out. The technical inspectors immediately started working with it and were extremely satisfied. The advantage of the open connection is the direct communication, because the inspector in the bus has to talk his colleague to the leak, as it were, which is not possible if there is too much delay on the line. An open connection is extremely important, especially for the safety of my employees.”
Robust and shatterproof
Delta Helium Test previously worked with other suppliers, but Vokkero offers better aspects that are suitable for the heavier work in the industry. “With other suppliers, all the technology is integrated into the headsets, but because of the conditions you tend to sweat and it doesn’t work very well. The Vokkero device is much more robust and shatterproof as we like to call it. Vokkero’s coverage, despite the obstacles we face every day on the work site, is much better and decisive for us. The batteries have a long service life, the device fits easily into a shirt pocket, and there is no need to disconnect the adapter cable during a break because the Peltor headset is equipped with a robust but easily detachable Nexus connector. This extends the lifespan of the Vokkero because in case of any wear and tear only the adapter cable needs to be replaced. For the headset solution, Vokkero uses the professional solution of 3M Peltor. In addition to good noise reduction, these headsets are also equipped with a microphone with good noise reduction, which together with the noise reduction function in the Vokkero device ensure optimum filtering of the desired speech and the unwanted ambient noise. This ensures a very clear and intelligible speech connection. This means that the intercommunication is easy to understand and possible at great heights, with steel constructions, concrete walls and noisy generators. Vokkero works significantly better.”
Quality and continuity
Delta Helium Test’s key areas of focus are continuity and experience, and it has made a conscious choice to use Flash. Marinus explains: “Jean-Pierre Audenaerdt understands his profession and speaks the language. He was immediately available to us, offers good service and support and is thoughtful. Delta Helium Test sometimes works under adverse conditions and Flash has almost 25 years of experience in the industry, they understand what’s going on. We value a long-term relationship with our suppliers and customers based on trust. Like us, they choose quality, continuity, efficiency and service, something that suits us well.”
