For more than 40 years, the World Port Days have been an integral concept in Rotterdam. The objective of this annual event is to strengthen the ties between the port, the town and its natural hinterland. During the first weekend of September, visitors can become acquainted with the multitude of activities at the port of Rotterdam.
Communication is vital to an event with over 350,000 visitors. Employees and volunteers must be constantly connected in order to maintain a clear overview and ensure safety. During the 42nd edition of the World Port Days (in 2019), the organisation used the smart communication solutions provided by Flash. Crucial role for radio communication Sabine Bruijnincx, Director of the World Port Days: “Radio communication plays a crucial role in running an event of this size. The site is large, there are a lot of visitors and the organisers must be well-connected with all the locations. Radio communication enables employees, volunteers, suppliers and production to communicate with one another.”
Efficiency, overview and safety
Our radio communication takes place using two-way radios because the reach of the mobile GSM network cannot be guaranteed during a large event. Bruijnincx: “Compared to mobile telephony, radio communication offers the advantage of guaranteeing reachability. Moreover, it offers advantages in the area of efficiency. Radio communication enables direct communication with an entire group. It automatically creates a clearer overview in the lines of communication.”
Optimal support from Flash
Commenting on the collaboration with Flash, Sabine Bruijnincx said: “It has been extremely pleasant working with Flash. An event like the World Port Days, with around 350,000 visitors over the course of three days filled with nautical demonstrations, excursions and a big evening show, requires a well-oiled production. Communication plays a crucial role here and Flash provided us with optimal support. Thanks, in part, to Flash’s contribution, the 39th edition of the World Port Days was another big success.”
