Smart devices as a valuable addition to two-way radio communications

Two-way radios provide security in reliable communications in case of emergencies. But in addition, we want to be able to do much more when it comes to voice and data communication. And we can, thanks to the latest ATEX smartphones and tablets. Smart solutions that promote safe and efficient working.

For decades, two-way radios have been the reliable means of communication during emergencies. “And they will continue to be for years to come,” says Henk Hempel, Senior Account Manager at Flash Private Mobile Networks, the leading provider of corporate and mission-critical communication solutions in the Netherlands and Belgium. “However, two-way radios have a limited lifespan, and that time is slowly approaching. They will eventually be replaced by smart mobile devices.”

Integration between systems

Hempel has been anticipating this shift for some time. “At Flash, we have traditionally been involved in the rental of explosion-proof two-way radios. We started that nearly 30 years ago. However, about ten to fifteen years ago, we noticed that our customers also had a need to integrate alarm systems with their two-way radio systems. That’s when our developments began. During that same period, we also saw a growing demand for the use of explosion-proof smartphones. Therefore, at Flash, we initially invested in the development of analog-to-digital two-way radio technology, enabling better integration with such devices.”

ATEX smartphones and tablets: smart devices

As with any advancements, they never stand still. “Regular cell phones have long been replaced by smartphones in the ‘ordinary’ world. They offer far more communication capabilities. That’s why a few years ago, Flash also invested in ATEX-certified smartphones and tablets. The possibilities we can now offer with these devices are tremendous.”

Connectivity

Smart alert features for immediate alerts and two-way communication during emergencies. Automatic location reporting. An overview of all notifications. A reliable push-to-talk function and guaranteed network availability. These are just a few examples of the capabilities. “And a highly important aspect is connectivity in the broadest sense of the word,” adds Hempel.

Two-way radios remain vital

Two-way radios are still far from disappearing. “Currently, they are still the most important communication tool, both for regular communication and during emergencies. This is due to our familiarity with them and the reliability of the network. The two-way radio network boasts a literal 99.999% availability, ensuring reliability.”

Crucial communication

Hempel explains that reliability is the top priority. “During an emergency, communication is crucial for ensuring people’s safety and the continuity of your facility. It would be unthinkable to be without coverage for any reason. The two-way radio network addresses this perfectly. Moreover, the frequencies are shielded to prevent anyone outside the network from eavesdropping. And safeguards are in place so that, in the event of system failure, you can rely on a backup system.”

Challenges in data networks

In theory, all these features are achievable with modern technologies. “Instead of using two-way radio frequencies, smart devices connect to a public or private data network. This works well but presents some challenges. Public data networks offer highly reliable availability. We have a priority service available on Odido (previously called T-Mobile) data network, called Flash SmartCom. On the other hand, private LTE networks can provide 99% availability but face scarcity in terms of available frequencies.”

Smart devices as a valuable addition

Smart devices are not yet a replacement for two-way radios. “But they are a valuable addition,” says Hempel. “They offer important additional features that are highly beneficial for safety and efficiency in daily operations and especially during emergencies. Especially through the integration of smart devices with the two-way radio network.”

Real-time insights anywhere, anytime

Hempel provides an example to illustrate this. “Imagine a situation where an emergency occurs, and a crucial member of the crisis management team is not on-site. That person can be immediately alerted and informed via their smartphone. Using a fully secure data network, they can communicate with on-site colleagues who are equipped with two-way radios, whether they are at home or on the move. By the time they arrive at the facility, they are already fully informed and can seamlessly join in managing the emergency.”

Flash is future-ready

Until the challenges related to reliable and equally available data network solutions are overcome, the combination of two-way radios and smart devices remains the best option. Hempel concludes, “And when these challenges are eventually overcome, we are fully prepared in terms of knowledge, technology, and expertise to assist customers in a gradual and secure transition.”
